Structural Drafting

Turning a design into drawings a site can actually build from. A structural drawing has to show every beam, column, slab and reinforcing bar in the right position and size, clearly enough that a bar bender who never met the engineer places the steel correctly. Drawing is the language construction runs on, and drafting is how you learn to speak it.

What you would actually study

  • Engineering Drawing and Building Drawing — plans, elevations and sections drawn to convention
  • Computer-Aided Drafting — AutoCAD, which is the standard tool in almost every site and design office
  • Reinforced concrete detailing — how reinforcement is shown, lapped and anchored
  • Bar bending schedules — converting a drawing into the exact lengths of steel to be cut and bent
  • Building Materials and Construction — what is being drawn, and how it is actually built
  • Mechanics of Structures — enough understanding of load to notice when a drawing looks wrong
  • Steel structures and their connection details

What the work is like

Desk work in a design office or a contractor's site office, producing and revising drawings, and going out to check what has been built against them. Revisions are constant, so the discipline is in keeping every drawing consistent with the latest change.

It suits you if

Students who are neat and exact, who can hold a three-dimensional structure in their head while drawing it flat, and who prefer producing something precise to negotiating with people all day.

The honest part

Drafting is treated as junior work and becomes repetitive if you let it stay purely mechanical. The draughtsman who also understands why the steel is placed where it is becomes indispensable and moves into detailing, estimation or site engineering; the one who only pushes lines does not. Software skill alone is not the specialisation — anyone can be taught the commands in a month.

Surveying

Measuring land and structures accurately, and marking on the ground where things must be built. Every project begins and ends with survey: what is the shape and level of this land, where exactly does this column go, and does what was built match what was drawn. Get this wrong and everything after it is wrong.

What you would actually study

  • Surveying fundamentals — chain and compass survey, ranging, offsets and plotting
  • Levelling — establishing heights and reduced levels, and contouring a piece of land
  • Theodolite and total station work — measuring angles and distances precisely
  • Setting out — transferring a drawing onto the ground, which is the practical purpose of it all
  • Modern survey methods in current schemes — satellite positioning and geographic information systems
  • Field work and survey camp — long outdoor practical sessions, which is how the subject is genuinely learnt
  • Engineering Drawing and Building Construction, so you understand what you are setting out

What the work is like

Outdoors and early in the day — instrument work on site, then reducing the readings and preparing drawings. On a large project the surveyor is one of the first people on the ground and is called on constantly after that.

It suits you if

Students who prefer being outside to being at a desk, who are patient with repeated readings, and who are careful — surveying rewards people who check their own work before anyone else does.

The honest part

Field survey is physical, weather-exposed and often at odd hours, and postings can be far from home. What people underestimate is how well it works as an independent skill: a surveyor who owns a total station and has a reputation for accuracy takes work directly from builders. Instruments have changed a great deal in a decade, so keep learning the newer ones rather than resting on chain and level.

Construction Management

Running a construction job so that it actually finishes — the sequence of work, the labour and material needed each week, the safety of everyone on site, and the records that get the contractor paid. Engineering says what to build; construction management is how it gets built on time and without anybody being hurt.

What you would actually study

  • Construction Management — planning, scheduling with bar charts and network methods, and monitoring progress
  • Construction Techniques and Equipment — how work is sequenced and what plant is used
  • Materials management and site stores — ordering, receiving and accounting for material
  • Site safety — the hazards of construction work and the precautions required
  • Quality control and testing of materials — concrete cubes, aggregates and steel
  • Contracts, tenders and specifications — how a project is awarded and what the contract obliges
  • Estimation and Costing, because schedule and money cannot be managed separately

What the work is like

Site-based and people-heavy: allocating labour each morning, chasing material, clearing whatever is blocking each gang, recording progress, and reporting to the engineer and the client. Long days and early starts are the norm.

It suits you if

Students who are organised, who can speak firmly and respectfully to people much older than themselves, and who are not thrown by a plan that changes by the hour.

The honest part

This is the specialisation where your authority comes from knowledge rather than your certificate — a supervisor who cannot answer a mason's question is quietly ignored, so spend your early years learning the actual trades. Site life is demanding, often six days a week and frequently away from home. Its reward is that it teaches you the whole business of construction, which is why so many contractors and builders started exactly here.

Estimation

Working out what a building will cost before it is built, and what is owed as it goes up. You take a set of drawings, measure every quantity in them — concrete, steel, brickwork, plaster, paint — apply rates, and produce a number that people will commit money to. It is the most commercially valuable thing a civil diploma teaches.

What you would actually study

  • Estimation and Costing — taking quantities off a drawing, item by item, in the standard order
  • Rate analysis — building up the rate for an item from material, labour and machinery
  • Specifications — what standard of work a rate assumes, and what changes if it is varied
  • Measurement and billing — measurement books, interim bills and final measurement
  • Tendering and contracts — how bids are invited, compared and awarded
  • Building Materials and Construction, because you cannot measure work you do not understand
  • Valuation of buildings, which appears in most schemes
  • Drawing reading and CAD, since every estimate begins from a drawing

What the work is like

Office work with regular site visits to verify what has actually been executed. Deadlines cluster around tender submissions and monthly billing, so the work arrives in intense bursts rather than evenly.

It suits you if

Students who are comfortable with arithmetic and detail, who are honest under pressure, and who can be trusted with numbers other people will rely on without checking.

The honest part

An estimator's mistake is expensive and traceable, which is exactly why the skill is respected and why people who are good at it are rarely out of work. Quantity surveying also travels well and is in steady demand in the Gulf. The catch is that it is dull to study and only becomes interesting once you have watched the work being executed, so get on site early rather than staying purely in the office.
