Industrial Electrician
The electrician trade as it is practised inside a factory rather than a house — motors, control panels, drives and machines instead of fans and light points. When a machine stops, production stops, so the industrial electrician has to find and fix the electrical cause quickly and safely, and then stop it happening again.
What you would actually study
- Safe working practice — isolation, earthing, permits to work and rescue from electric shock, drilled until it is automatic
- Reading wiring and control diagrams, and tracing that circuit on a real panel
- Motor control wiring — direct-on-line and star-delta starters, contactors, overload relays and interlocks
- Electrical machines — connecting, testing and rewinding three-phase motors, transformers and generators
- Measuring instruments — multimeter, clamp meter, insulation tester and earth tester, and what each reading actually tells you
- Cable selection, jointing and termination, including glanding and lugging
- Switchgear — fuses, miniature and moulded case circuit breakers, and setting protection correctly
- Fault-finding and preventive maintenance on machines and distribution boards
What the work is like
Inside plants and workshops, often in heat, noise and cramped spaces, and usually in shifts. Much of the day is inspection and preventive maintenance; the rest is breakdown work with a supervisor waiting, which is where the trade gets judged.
It suits you if
People who stay calm under pressure, who are disciplined about safety rules even when nobody is watching, and who like fixing things that other people are depending on immediately.
The honest part
Families treat ITI as what you do when nothing else worked out, and the trade itself does not agree: a skilled industrial electrician is short in supply, works everywhere from a small unit to a refinery, and holds one of the few qualifications that opens a door in the first year rather than the fourth. What is genuinely hard is the risk, because electricity is unforgiving of shortcuts, and the early years of shift work. Insist on a DGT-affiliated ITI so the certificate is nationally recognised, and take the apprenticeship seriously, since that is where most permanent jobs come from.

- Craft Instructor Training Scheme, which qualifies you to teach the trade in an ITI
- A wiring contractor licence and your own electrical contracting business
- Work abroad, where the trade is recognised and in demand, particularly in the Gulf
Wireman
Wiring buildings — houses, shops, offices and small industrial units — from the meter to the last switch. It covers the conduit and cable hidden in the walls, the distribution board, the earthing, and everything that has to be safe and to code before a building can be occupied.
What you would actually study
- Domestic and industrial wiring — conduit, casing-capping and concealed wiring laid out to a plan
- Distribution boards — arranging circuits, fixing breakers and residual current devices, and labelling them properly
- Earthing — pipe and plate earthing, earth resistance testing, and why no installation is safe without it
- Reading a wiring layout and setting out switch, light and power points from it
- Cable sizing, joints, terminations and service connections
- Illumination — lamp and fitting types, and lighting a space adequately
- Testing an installation — continuity, insulation resistance and polarity checks before it is energised
- Estimating the material and labour a wiring job will need
What the work is like
Building sites and occupied buildings — chasing walls, pulling wire through conduit, working from ladders, and fitting around other trades. New work is steady daytime labour; repair work means being called out when something has failed.
It suits you if
People who are neat and methodical, who can work at height and in awkward positions, and who deal well with customers — most wiring work arrives by word of mouth rather than advertisement.
The honest part
This is one of the trades where more people end up self-employed than employed, and where a customer cares less about your certificate than about a reputation for work that does not fail. The money therefore follows trust, and trust takes a few years to build. It also means learning the commercial side — quoting, buying material, collecting payment — that no ITI teaches. Take the wiring rules and the testing seriously even when a customer wants it done cheaply, because bad wiring is what burns buildings down.

Electrical Fitter
The hands-on installation side of electrical work — physically putting equipment in place and connecting it up. Motors, pumps, panels, cable trays and switchgear have to be mounted level, aligned, bolted, glanded and terminated before anything can be switched on, and doing that properly is a trade in its own right.
What you would actually study
- Fitting and mounting practice — marking, drilling, bolting and levelling equipment on its foundation
- Installing motors and pumps — alignment with the driven machine, coupling and belt tensioning
- Cable work — laying on trays and in trenches, glanding, lugging and terminating
- Panel and switchgear erection — assembling, positioning and connecting busbars
- Earthing systems — laying the earth grid, digging pits and bonding equipment
- Measuring instruments and pre-commissioning tests — insulation resistance, continuity and phase sequence
- Safe working practice — isolation, lifting, working at height and permit systems
- Reading installation drawings, cable schedules and equipment manuals
What the work is like
Project and shutdown work rather than routine duty — erection at new plants, retrofits, and the intense periods when a plant is stopped and everything is installed or replaced at once. Physical, often outdoors, and frequently away from home.
It suits you if
People who are physically fit, who work well in a crew, and who take pride in an installation being straight, tight and tidy — in this trade the quality of the work is visible to everyone.
The honest part
Erection and commissioning work follows projects, which means living near a site for months and then moving on. The pay for that travel is real and so is the disruption, so decide honestly whether that life suits you. What compensates is that project work puts you in front of far more equipment in two years than routine maintenance does in five, which is why erection hands often become the best maintenance electricians and supervisors afterwards.
