Inside Teaching — Integrated B.A B.Ed / B.Sc B.Ed (ITEP)
6 of the specialisations you can take within this course — what each one teaches, who it suits, and what you can choose once it is done.
Languages
The integrated route to becoming a language teacher — you study a language and its literature to degree level and, at the same time, learn how children acquire language and how to teach it. Four years after Class 12 you leave with both a subject degree and a teaching qualification.
What you would actually study
- The language major — grammar, literature and composition, studied to degree level
- Linguistics and Language Acquisition — how children learn a first, second and third language
- Pedagogy of Language Teaching — methods for reading, writing, listening and speaking
- Foundations of Education — the philosophical, sociological and historical basis of schooling in India
- Educational Psychology — how children develop and learn at different ages
- Curriculum, Assessment and Evaluation — planning lessons and judging learning fairly
- ICT in Education — using technology in a real classroom
- School Internship — extended supervised teaching in a school, which is the heart of the programme
What the work is like
Teaching several classes a day, preparing lessons, correcting written work, and handling a room where command of the language varies enormously. Language teachers also carry much of the school beyond their subject — assemblies, cultural programmes and events.
It suits you if
Students who love a language and like children equally, because you need both. Patience with a slow reader matters more than brilliance in literature, and strength in Kannada as well as English is a real advantage in Karnataka schools.
The honest part
This is a four-year commitment taken straight after Class 12, and if you leave it midway you have neither a degree nor a teaching qualification — so be reasonably sure before you enter. Know too that the qualification alone does not appoint you: government school posts are filled through the teacher eligibility test and the state recruitment process, which are competitive and separate from your degree.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Language teacher posts in private and government schools
- Government school recruitment, after clearing the teacher eligibility test
- MA in the language, for senior secondary and college routes
- M.Ed, then teacher training, supervision or education administration
- UGC-NET after a masters, for college lectureship
- Curriculum, textbook and educational publishing work
Mathematics
Four years that make you a mathematics teacher — a mathematics degree and a teaching qualification taken together over four years. You study the subject properly, and you learn why children find particular ideas difficult, which is a separate skill from being good at mathematics yourself.
What you would actually study
- Mathematics major — algebra, calculus, geometry and the other degree-level content
- Pedagogy of Mathematics — how concepts are introduced, and the misconceptions children reliably form
- Foundations of Education — the philosophical and social basis of schooling
- Educational Psychology — cognitive development, and how mathematical thinking grows
- Assessment and Evaluation — designing tests that measure understanding rather than memory
- ICT in Education, including mathematics teaching tools
- Inclusive Education — teaching a class in which abilities differ widely
- School Internship — supervised classroom teaching over an extended period
What the work is like
Teaching, preparing examples and problems, correcting, and above all diagnosing — working out where in a chain of reasoning a particular child got lost. Mathematics teachers also spend a great deal of time undoing fear of the subject.
It suits you if
Students who enjoy mathematics and can explain it several different ways, who are patient with a child who is not getting it, and who are interested in how understanding is built rather than only in whether the answer is right.
The honest part
Good mathematics teachers are genuinely scarce, in Karnataka and everywhere else, and that scarcity is your advantage. But be clear that being strong at mathematics is not the same as being able to teach it — the pedagogy and internship parts of this programme are what will actually make you effective and employable, and treating them as the easy papers is the common mistake.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Mathematics teacher posts in schools
- Government school recruitment, after the teacher eligibility test
- M.Sc in Mathematics, for senior secondary and college teaching
- M.Ed, then teacher training or education administration
- Curriculum and assessment work with education bodies
- Educational content and edtech roles
Science
Four years that make you a science teacher — a science degree and a teaching qualification together. You learn physics, chemistry and biology to degree level, and learn to teach them as investigation rather than as a list of facts to be memorised.
What you would actually study
- Science major — physics, chemistry and biology content at degree level, with laboratory work
- Pedagogy of Science — teaching through experiment, enquiry and demonstration
- Laboratory Practice and Safety — running a school laboratory properly
- Foundations of Education — the aims and social context of schooling
- Educational Psychology — how children build scientific ideas, and the misconceptions they hold
- Curriculum, Assessment and Evaluation
- Environmental Education, which is a required part of school science
- School Internship — extended supervised teaching
What the work is like
Teaching, setting up and running practicals, correcting records, and improvising demonstrations when the equipment is missing, which in many schools is most of the time. Science teachers usually also run science fairs, exhibitions and clubs.
It suits you if
Students who enjoyed laboratory work more than lectures, who like explaining, and who are resourceful — a good school science teacher can demonstrate a principle with household objects when the apparatus is broken.
The honest part
Many students take a B.Sc first and decide about teaching later; this programme asks you to decide now, in exchange for saving a year, so consider carefully whether you are sure. Know the realistic constraint of the job too: school laboratories are often poorly equipped and syllabus pressure pushes teaching back towards memorisation, and resisting that takes deliberate effort throughout a career.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Science teacher posts in schools
- Government recruitment through the teacher eligibility test and state selection
- M.Sc in a science subject, for senior secondary and college teaching
- M.Ed, then teacher education or education administration
- Curriculum, textbook and science communication work
- Science outreach with museums, planetariums and science centres
Social Science
One course that makes you a social science teacher — history, geography, political science and economics — with the training to teach them. It is the school subject that shapes how children understand their country and their Constitution, which makes it a more responsible job than it is usually given credit for.
What you would actually study
- Social science major — history, geography, political science and economics at degree level
- Pedagogy of Social Science — teaching with sources, maps, discussion and enquiry
- Constitutional Values and Citizenship Education
- Foundations of Education — the aims of schooling and its social context
- Educational Psychology — how children develop an understanding of time, place and society
- Curriculum, Assessment and Evaluation
- ICT in Education, and the use of maps, sources and audio-visual material
- School Internship — extended supervised classroom teaching
What the work is like
Teaching four subjects that behave very differently, correcting a large volume of written work, and handling classroom discussions that can turn contentious — this is the subject where current events walk into the room.
It suits you if
Students who read widely, who can hold a balanced discussion with a class that has strong opinions, and who are interested in making a map or a constitutional idea feel real to a thirteen-year-old.
The honest part
Social science is the subject most often taught as a list of facts to be memorised, because that is the easiest thing to test, and doing better than that is a deliberate choice you have to keep making. You will also teach contested material to children whose families disagree with each other; fairness, evidence and calm are the professional tools for that, and this programme is where you should learn them.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Social science teacher posts in schools
- Government school recruitment, after the teacher eligibility test
- MA in history, geography, political science or economics, for senior classes and college teaching
- M.Ed, then teacher training or education administration
- Curriculum and textbook development with state and national education bodies
- UPSC and KPSC, open to any graduate, where this subject knowledge is directly relevant
Commerce
One course that makes you a commerce teacher — accountancy, business studies and economics — with the teaching qualification built in. It prepares you to teach the senior school subjects that connect most directly to how businesses and money actually work.
What you would actually study
- Commerce major — accountancy, business studies and economics at degree level
- Pedagogy of Commerce — teaching accounts and business concepts through practical examples
- Foundations of Education — the aims and social context of schooling
- Educational Psychology — adolescent learning, since commerce is largely a senior school subject
- Curriculum, Assessment and Evaluation
- ICT in Education, including accounting and spreadsheet tools
- Inclusive Education
- School Internship — supervised teaching in a school
What the work is like
Teaching senior classes, working through problems on the board, correcting large sets of accounting exercises, and preparing students for board examinations, which shapes much of the year.
It suits you if
Students who are comfortable with numbers and business ideas, who like the classroom, and who are steady enough to take a class through the same accounting concept as many times as it takes.
The honest part
Commerce teaching posts sit mainly at senior secondary level, so demand is narrower than for languages or mathematics, and many schools expect a postgraduate degree for those classes — plan on an M.Com or an MA in Economics. Weigh the competing route honestly too: many commerce graduates teach after a professional qualification or industry experience, which brings a credibility in the classroom worth thinking about.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Commerce teacher posts at senior secondary level
- M.Com or MA in Economics, generally expected for senior classes
- Government school recruitment, after the teacher eligibility test
- M.Ed, then teacher education or administration
- Commerce coaching and educational content work
- College lectureship, after a masters and UGC-NET
Physical Education
Four years to become a physical education teacher — you study the body, movement, sport and health alongside the education and teaching courses. It treats physical education as a subject with its own content, rather than as the free period the school timetable too often makes it.
What you would actually study
- Anatomy and Physiology — how the body is built, and how it responds to activity
- Sports and Games — skills, rules and coaching methods across a range of sports
- Health and Wellness Education — nutrition, hygiene, growth and safety
- Yoga — practice and method of teaching
- Pedagogy of Physical Education — planning lessons and managing a large group in open space
- Foundations of Education and Educational Psychology
- Assessment in physical education, and first aid
- School Internship — supervised teaching, including running school sport
What the work is like
Outdoor classes in all weather, running practice sessions and school teams, organising sports days and inter-school competition, and managing safety for large groups of energetic children.
It suits you if
Students who are physically active and want to stay that way at work, who can hold the attention of forty children in an open ground, and who care about the child who is not sporty as much as about the school team.
The honest part
Physical education teachers are frequently treated as less important than subject teachers — given the timetable last and asked to cover other duties. That is the professional reality, and the teachers who change it are the ones who treat their subject seriously and can show what children gained. Note the alternative route as well: the B.P.Ed remains the traditional qualification for these posts, so compare the two carefully before committing four years.
Finished this. What can you choose next?
- Physical education teacher posts in schools
- Government school recruitment, after the required eligibility test and state selection
- M.P.Ed, or a coaching diploma, for specialised sports coaching
- Sports coordinator and director of sport roles in school groups
- Fitness, yoga and sports academy work
- M.Ed, then education administration
